Some of you might have questions:

For everyone that is wondering why I added you as a friend -

Hello, my name is Greg and I live in Cincinnati, OH. This blog chronicles an experiment of sorts to see how much you can get from companies by simply asking. This post adds a little more detail.

If you don't want to read more, or aren't interested in reading this, leave a comment and I'll remove you from my friends list. I don't know if I have committed some serious livejournal faux pas but if I have bothered you I am sorry and I'll correct it as soon as possible.

I'd like to make a few things clear.

~ I won't be offended if you don't add me back.
~ I'm not doing this out of greed. It's a social experiment.
~ Also, I don't see anything wrong with friending strangers
how else do you meet people.

With that said -

To the person that left the Nick Zedd comment and deleted it. I still don't understand the reference, and I tried to leave you a comment but it said I was banned from your journal. So, yeah I guess I'll take that hike you suggested but I still don't know what to do. Do you want me to take you off my f-list? I thought the comment was funny, although I'm sure it would have been way more funny if I didn't have to wiki Nick Zedd. So, I guess I'm sorry we couldn't be friends.

And on that note I'd like to applogize in advance to anyone I have offended, or ticked off, or rubbed the wrong way, or et cetera.

To the rest of you Thanks! I appreciate your support.

Oh PS -
This is me

I admit, I did wonder why you choose me out of the pool of, what is it now, 11 million journals here? I'm guessing it was because we had common interests of poker and beer.

Yeah, some people here get touchy about being added to Friends lists. God knows why but they do. Oh well.

Did you get the Nick Zedd reference. I'm still puzzled.

No, I didn't get it either.

Nick Zedd is some hipster artfart filmmmmmmaker from NYC as far as I can gather. Perhaps you fell askance of some hipster code of decorum. As the Phish kids used to say: Whatev.

People are sort of weird like that. I dunno. I don't know why people get so bent out of shape over strangers randomly friending them. It's not like you have to friend them back. At worst it just means the numbers on your friends and friends of lists don't match up. :O OH NOES.

:) yeah I guess some people just like the symmetry

well, as an example of why i'd be upset someone friended me who didn't know me: there's a guy who has me friended who posts a lot of racist, neo-nazi bullshit in his lj. i don't know who he is or why he found me or whatever. i don't want friends of mine, curious who else has friended me, to find his journal. straight up, it's pretty disgusting.
[info]justaskforit wrote:

I guess then you'd like me to remove you from my f-list?

Also it sounds like your Racist/Neo-Nazi problem should be reported to LJ because I'm sure he's broken the TOS. Just saying.

meh, it's up to you. it honestly matters not to me whether or not you want to unfriend me or not. you're no nazi, as far as i can tell. ;)

yeah, you'd think, but because it's all in portuguese, lj seems reticent to do anything about it.

You speak portuguese? Thanks pretty cool. I had a friend I used to work with that came over when he was little. Tried teaching it to me, never really held. It seemed tough.

Oh I friended you based on a shared interest in beer, music, and pranks, BTW not some random clickity-click.

I admit, that does make sense. That would bother me too.
[info]krss wrote:

I can't speak for everyone, but I have been added by strangers who proved to be freaks in the bad sense of the word-- one guy's posts and icons were really disgusting, one other person made shocking posts just for the fun of pissing people off (and stalked the ones who were pissed off), there was one who kept adding and deleting people just to annoy them by getting that notification all the time, and so on..

But you definitely are not one of those, which is why I added you back. =)
[info]justaskforit wrote:

I didn't think about that. Livejournal needs a credibility system, so people can weed out jerks.

er, yeah...
so that actually doesn't answer what adding me as a friend was supposed to do for you. or, for that matter, why me.

i won't be following your progress, but good luck on your attempt to bilk companies out of their products - try and do something good with it, other than accumulating more consumer goods (which you'll end up throwing away, putting in storage, or putting on ebay eventually, i bet).
[info]justaskforit wrote:
Feb. 18th, 2007 06:33 am (UTC)
Re: er, yeah...
I don't know about "bilk" especially because in common usage it would mean at least to me, that I somehow cheated the companies I make requests of out of their products.

This couldn't be farther from the truth considering I am completely upfront with them about my intentions and situations.

I've stated I'm not going to sell anything. The order in which the "consumer goods" will go is Family -> Friends -> And then anyone that needs it. In fact I've considered putting the "consumer goods" up on here for someone to request.

But thanks for the comment and the input.

In addition:
[Posted in response to a question from [info]jenlight]
"...you need to have a lot of LJ friends. How does that enhance the experiment?"

Well... A few things.

First, having a large group of readers* I think will influence companies to give when they generally wouldn't. It gives the effort credibility that wouldn't be there if the "interest" was absent.

*Readers: Although this term may be considered facecious because adding a friend in lj doesn't mean anything really, it doesn't mean someone will read your posts, or have any interest. Basically all it is does is gets a bit of attention maybe from the person you friended.

Secondly, the experiment may not just be limited to the stated purpose of this blog. It could be that the "asking" part is a confederate effort in the macro-experiment.

Or I'm just vain and want people to watch me get stuff :P

Or better yet I want to meet new people, and do something interesting, and get something thats both intangible and tangible out of it at the same time.

But to be honest I don't really know, although I don't think anyone could accuse me of not thinking it through.

Great question though!

Can I donate from my company or do I have to be asked?

Sure. I mean as long as you don't sell poisonous snakes or velocoraptors or something like that :)

Send me an email at justaskblog@gmail.com so I can make a formal request.

Thanks

actually, I bet music labels, especially smaller indie, rock, rap, or metal ones, give sampler CDs.
also from the fiancee: Dove, the soap company (as opposed to dove, the death metal label) readily sends out samples.

I've given that some thought and just yesterday put Proctor and Gamble on the request list. Although thinking about it didn't P&G sell off the Dove line? I'll have to find out who owns it now if thats the case.

Aloha,
Interesting project, but please take me off your friends list.

Nothing personal, but this isn' t Myspace, and by and large, my friends-only posts are directed at a specific audience, not the general public.
Good luck with your goal!
